02. Ballot, 1924
4 Zylinder, 2000 cm³
Karosseriehersteller: Torpedo Sport, Lagache-Glaszmann
Teilnehmer: André Plasch (B)
In the 1920s the French car company Ballot, barely heard of any more these days, provided coachbuilders Lagache-Glaszman with a chassis on which they built a Torpedo Sport body. Today the marque – which was also highly successful in motor racing– survives in only a few, rarely seen specimens.
04. Isotta-Fraschini 8A, 1926
8 Zylinder, 7368 cm³
Karosseriehersteller: Coupé de Ville, Cesare Sala
Teilnehmer: Renato Genovese (I)
Italian coachbuilder Cesare Sala provided luxury superstructures for the chassis built by Isotta-Fraschini on behalf of upmarket customers nationally and internationally. The interiors also featured exclusive materials. A special-edition Isotta-Fraschini belonged to the fleet of cars owned by Rudolf Valentino, for one. In the very first Concorso de’Eleganza Villa d’Este of 1929, an Isotta-Fraschini by Cesare Sala with a faux-cabriolet body won the coveted Coppa d’Oro.
06. Rolls-Royce Phantom I, 1926
6 Zylinder, 7668 cm³
Karosseriehersteller: Piccadilly Roadster, Custom Coachwork Body
Teilnehmer: Robert Braunschweig (CH)
The Phantom I chassis built at the American Rolls-Royce plant in Springfield also received this impressive body in the USA. To allow access to the rumble seat, a door to the rear seat bench was added in the 1920s.
08. Rolls-Royce Phantom I, 1927
6 Zylinder, 7668 cm³
Karosseriehersteller: Dual Cowl Phaeton, Brewster
Teilnehmer: Gian Luigi trevisani (I)
Similarly based on a Phantom I Chassis is this Dual Cowl Phaeton by American coachwork company Brewster. The smooth-running 6-Zylinder engine with a displacement of more than seven litres was ideally suited for cruising along Hollywood’s boulevards and contributed to the outstanding reputation the Rolls-Royce marque enjoys to this day.
10. Hispano-Suiza H6B, 1928
6 Zylinder, 6597 cm³
Karosseriehersteller: Cabriolet, Hibbard & Darrin
Teilnehmer: Erich Haller (CH)
The Hispano-Suiza models built by Swiss engineer Mark Birkgit were primarily targeted at a well-heeled clientele. Spain’s King Alphonso had a Hispano-Suiza model in his car fleet of the time.
French coachbuilders Hibbard & Darrin, who also made a name for themselves with superstructures mounted on Rolls-Royce and Duesenberg chassis, created this magnificent two-seater H6B, which is on display for the first time in Italy after comprehensive restoration by its current owner.
12. Bianchi S-5, 1929
4 Zylinder, 1300 cm³
Karosseriehersteller: Torpedo Sport “Weymann”, Bianchi
Teilnehmer: Corrado Lopresto (I)
This Bianchi in original condition was given a specially lightweight “artificial leather body” based on a patent by the Weymann company. In the 1920s, this construction method was applied under licence by many coachbuilders thanks to its very positive impact on the car’s overall weight. We are delighted to be able to present such an unrestored model in its original condition in the Concorso.
14. Bugatti 35A, 1926
8 Zylinder, 2300 cm³
Karosseriehersteller: Grand Sport, Bugatti
Teilnehmer: Roland Jordi (CH)
Apart from the famous Bugatti 35C, which was very successfully fielded in motor sport by Bugatti and claimed numerous trophies, the 35A was not designed primarily with the race track in mind. The famous British racing driver Dick Seaman received this model as a gift in his younger years, and it undoubtedly had a positive impact on the start of his racing career. The car is in absolute original condition.
