HIGH PERFORMANCE BASED ON TRADITIONConcorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2023

High performance based on tradition: The BMW 3.0 CSL.

A masterpiece born of engineering artistry and the essence from 50 years of motor-sport passion. BMW M GmbH celebrates the premiere for the new edition of the legendary BMW 3.0 CSL (combined fuel consumption: 11.0 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 249 g/km in compliance with WLTP) now packing power of 412 kW / 560 hp. This new edition is limited to 50 examples. The automobile will be presented to a public audience on the weekend of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este bathed in exceptionally emotional charisma alongside the historic BMW 3.0 CSL.

The small-series automobile combines the essence from five decades of motor-sport know-how.

The concept and design of the new edition BMW 3.0 CSL is intended as a hommage to travel à deux. Fitted with its striking spoiler, it even today reprises the legendary “Batmobile”, the historic model manufactured from 1973 to 1975.

The consecutively numbered examples of the special model have been created with supreme dedication to craft excellence. This even extends to the manual painting process, in which specialists use templates to apply the livery specific to the 3.0 CSL with the three M colour stripes in light blue, dark blue and red. The vehicle is subsequently assembled in stages using a complex manufacturing process at the external site of the BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in Moosthenning, Lower Bavaria. The production of all the vehicles takes a total of some three months.

“Coupé, Sport, Leichtbau” – “Coupé, Sport, Lightweight”

In the launch season of 1973, the historic BMW 3.0 CSL made an outstanding start by winning the European Touring Car Championship and repeated this championship victory five times in succession from 1975 to 1979. The legendary formula underpinning this success was “Coupé, Sport, Leichtbau” – “Coupé, Sport, Lightweight” and this is reinterpreted for the anniversary model. The power-to-weight ratio of the limited-edition BMW 3.0 CSL is just an astounding 2.9 kilogrammes for each horsepower. Alongside the light alloy aluminium, the particularly large amount of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic for the bodywork contributes to this. All carbon components are produced in a very small series, largely fabricated by hand and made exclusively for the BMW 3.0 CSL.

The most powerful inline 6-cylinder engine ever fitted in a BMW M automobile licensed for road use benefits from M TwinPower Turbo technology and underwent exclusive advanced development for the BMW 3.0 CSL.

The spontaneous torquey response of the 3.0 powerplant complements that typical M high-revving concept for particularly dynamic driving situations. Its technological roots are embedded in the engine of the series vehicle for the German Touring Car Championship of 2022.

This makes driving in a BMW 3.0 CSL not just an exclusive high-performance experience but an emotional encounter with history and the awesome presence of the most powerful letter in the world.
