Legend has it that a BMW 328 originally persuaded Darl’Mat to design the Peugeot 302. Inspired by the development of the German sports car, the Peugeot dealer and automobile enthusiast Emile Darl’mat collaborated with Charles Roero de Cortanze, a good friend and Peugeot works driver, to come up with the following idea on the race track in Montlhéry, France, in 1936: What about combining the new short chassis of the Peugeot 302 with a wider track and the dependable two-litre engine from the Peugeot 402?

Peugeot went along with the idea and Emile Darl’mat com- missioned the appropriate bodies. Georges Paulin penned designs for them, and Marcel Pourtout in Rueil Malmaison near Paris took on the production. As early as 1937, an ambitious team entered the 24 Hour of Le Mans with three Peugeot 302 Darl’mat Sport racers – this example is one of the cars raced. It won its class and achieved seventh place in the overall standings. For over 30 years, all trace of this car was lost until a sale of the car became known in 1967. The hero of Le Mans is presented today having undergone an authentic restoration, and it has enriched the collection of its American owner since 2019.
