CLASS G – A CENTURY OF THE 24 HOURS OF LE MANS: HEROES OF THE MOST FAMOUS RACE IN THE WORLD

The 24 Hour Race of Le Mans is legendary. This year the iconic endurance race is celebrating its centenary.

The 2023 edition will go down in the annals of motor sport and attain immortality.

The circuit in France covering a distance of 13.5 kilometres stands for an awesome range of superlatives, and every year the high-powered technology conjured up by the engineers of the competing automobile manufacturers proves a magical magnet of attraction for motor-sport fans. The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is looking forward to celebrating the heroes of the world’s most famous motor race in 2023 with a dedicated award class.

Over a period of one hundred years, the 24 Hour Race of Le Mans has been testing not only the reliability and development status of the automobiles campaigning in the race but also the masterful skills of the racing drivers piloting them.

In teams of three, they drive approximately 5,000 kilometres over the course of the entire race. As the years have rolled by, the vehicles have got faster and the distance they travel has increased from 2,209 kilometres in the first race to more than twice that in 2023.

The history of motor sport is primarily written by the development stages of the various powerhouses providing propulsion.

After the supercharger in the 1930s, the launch of turbocharged engines in the 1970s brought about a huge change in the development of engines powering into the race at Le Mans. 39 victories since the launch of turbo engines in this iconic race are a fitting tribute to their dominance between 1976 and the early 2000s. In 2012, approval of hybrid vehicles for the 24 Hour Race of Le Mans marked the beginning of a new technological revolution. Since then, this class of automobiles has exclusively crossed the finishing line of the fabulous endurance race in first place and they are continuing to write history to this day.

At the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2023, historic models can be admired from the period between 1937 and 1981. Like the vehicle classes approved to race at Le Mans, the automobiles competing at Lake Como will include sports-car prototypes and Gran Turismos. Alongside innovations in the vehicle engines, the outstanding coachwork designs spanning a period of six decades also narrate the incomparable races around the world’s most impressive motor-sport event.
