Porsche - 904 Carerra GTS
Class D40

No model more obviously heralds precisely where Porsche positioned itself during the 1960s than the 904 model series launched in 1963. Back in the day, any form of motor sport motivated designers and customers alike to excel. Porsche was even playing a proactive role in Formula 1. Then there were all manner of rallies, sports-car races and hillclimbs. This was where the Carrera GTS – as the 904 was officially designated – quickly ran in a series of victories. The famous Fuhrmann engine with four camshafts and the legendary vertical shafts had meanwhile grown to a displacement of two litres and generated an output of 180 hp in the 904.

This accelerated the Carrera to a top speed of 260 km / h. Even today, the Carrera GTS – which was the real name of the Type 904 – is regarded as a highly emotional automobile. The sporting and yet elegant body was fashioned in fibreglass by aircraft manufacturer Heinkel. Only a few examples of the 904 are able to relate the six decades of their life as comprehensively as this Porsche, which came into the hands of its first owner domiciled in Wiesbaden (Germany) in May 1964. The coupé’s career in motor sport started at legendary hillclimbs in Germany and continued in the USA from 1967. In spite of numerous hard-driving race campaigns, this 904 continues to be powered by its original engine today.
