A CENTURY OF THE 24 HOURS OF LE MANS: HEROES OF THE MOST FAMOUS RACE IN THE WORLD

Porsche - 936/77
Class G92

The 917 had delivered some impressive sporting successes and Porsche initially took its time coming up with a successor. Then a decision was suddenly taken post-haste in 1976. After a breakneck development, Porsche presented the 936, a sports car for Group 6. Having undergone advanced development, the spaceframe from the 917 served as the platform and also provided the profile of the tail end, while the designers relied on the 908 for the front end. In spite of these powerful ingredients, Porsche only built three works cars, which makes the record of the biturbo Boxer engines all the more impressive. Jacky Ickx, Hurley Haywood and Jürgen Barth ran in a victory at Le Mans in 1977 with this example, number 936-001. The other two 936 prototypes won Le Mans in 1976 and 1981 respectively, and they remained in the possession of Porsche.

By contrast, the 936-001 passed into private hands after competing in five races at Le Mans. A period of detailed restoration followed, supported by Porsche expertise. Today, the 936-001 is presented once again exactly as it was for the victory at Le Mans in 1977. The racing car has been in the custody of its present owner since 2011, and last year Jacky Ickx had an opportunity to take the wheel of his victorious car once more.
