Rolls-Royce - Phantom III Gurney Nutting Touring Saloon
Special Exhibition11

Rolls-Royce was well aware that the successor to the Phantom II required more than a six-cylinder engine to stand up to the tough competition prevailing at the top end of the luxury automobile class. A decision was therefore taken to fit the Phantom III launched in October 1935 with a lightweight alloy V12 engine.

Like the power unit, the chassis was also new, but it was heavy, weighing 1840 kg. Nevertheless, the Phantom III was able to achieve speeds of more than 140 km/h. Up to 1949, Rolls-Royce produced series automobiles exclusively in the form of rolling chassis with all power units. This body was styled as a “Touring Saloon” by coachbuilder Gurney Nutting.
