For the first time in the history of German motor sport, BMW Racing Director Jochen Neerpasch presented a works team consisting only of juniors in 1977. The German Racing Championship (DRM) was one of the toughest tests for drivers and vehicles. It became the arena for the promising junior drivers Eddie Cheever, Marc Surer and Manfred Winkelhock. While Cheever and Surer benefited from factory-prepared cars, Winkelhock had to prepare his BMW himself at BMW Motorsport GmbH. Winkelhock lived up to the trust placed in him and became the most successful driver in the small division of the DRM in 1977.
