The BMW M3 Group A created a racing car that was destined to drive to more victories in the subsequent years than any other car in its class. Different displacement volumes were used as a result of the varying regulations in different countries, for example 2.3 litres for the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) from 1987 to 1989 and 2.5 litres for the DTM from 1990. The M3 became the most successful touring car in the world when it won the World Championship, two European Championships, two German Touring Car Championships, 60 national championships, seven European Hillclimb Championships, five Mitropa Rally Cups and eight victories in 24 Hour Races.
