The M3 was presented as the first M model in the BMW 3 Series at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in 1985. It was developed by BMW Motorsport GmbH with the aim of creating a basic vehicle for motor sport and also developing a sporty automobile suitable for everyday road use. This M3 became the most successful touring car in motor sport. Early in 1990, a limited edition was produced with the designation “Sport Evolution”. Weight reduction, special equipment and much higher engine power gave this rarity the capability to generate exceptionally dynamic performance.
