The lower-slung chassis of the Rolls-Royce Phantom II presented an important improvement over its predecessor since together with hydraulic shock absorbers it enhanced the handling and comfort even further. The Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental was based on the chassis of the Phantom II, shortened by about 152 mm. It was built especially for customers who had particularly high aspirations for above-average speeds while touring. At the time, this was a particular feature of the well-developed network of fast roads in France, where Rolls-Royce had been carrying out high-speed durability tests since the development of the 40/50 hp. These tests revealed even the smallest weaknesses in the power unit and chassis.
